"When
I moved to South Florida nine years ago I had been out of
formal martial arts for quite some time. I had moved from
the school I attended in the Boston area five years prior
to my move to Florida. When my son, Michael, got to an appropriate
age, six, I enrolled him in the closest school to my house
for convenience. He spent a year there and showed great interest
and promise as a martial artist, however, I came to realize
that I was not happy with the school. I spent almost ten years
in a traditional setting and could not stand placing him in
a school which seemed more interested in making money than
in teaching traditional martial arts. So I began to look for
a new school.
I found Grandmaster Steven Bowman and his school after visiting
at least 20 other schools. Master Bowman, while slightly more
expensive than others, had smaller classes, and was much more
involved in his students progress. After speaking at length
with him I discovered that he and I shared many of the same
traditional feelings. I enrolled Michael that day.
About six months after I enrolled Michael I enrolled myself.
I had finally found a school which filled a gap in my life
created when I left my school in Boston. Master Bowman, through
more encouragement than I thought possibly imaginable, convinced
me that I should work towards my instructor's rank. This is
not to say that I had never instructed before, as I hold two
certificates for that skill in other art forms. Rather, I
had not thought I wanted to instruct again.
I believe that Master Bowman has created an outstanding school,
based on traditional concepts with modern teaching applications.
This school, which teaches respect, control, responsibility,
and self confidence through the instruction of martial arts
and traditional values, has become almost as second home for
myself and my son. We are both eager to attend class and are
constantly challenged to become better.
Not only would I fully recommend Master Bowman as an instructor.
I have on many occasions recommended him to parents, students
and fellow law enforcement officers who are seeking knowledge
and skill in martial arts.
